Neural Circuit Motifs

Our work has shown that the many types of sensory-motor circuits that form nuclear architecture in adults first arise as stripes of neurons arrayed by neurotransmitter type. The first born neurons are hardest to excite (low input resistance) and are involved in faster behaviors such as fast swimming and escape, while younger neurons are added in dorsally on top and are easier to excite (high input resistance) and are involved in slower behaviors such as slow swimming.  This landmark work has been cited 215 times.
